An International Anti-Corruption Day was observed at the Main Campus
Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan on December 14, 2017. The Department of
Sociology organized the event. The Deputy Commissioner Mardan was the Guest
Speaker. The event was formally started with recitation from the Holy Quran by
Mr. Usama (Student). Dr. Syed Rashid Ali Coordinator Main Campus/Chairperson
Department of Sociology formally welcomed the entire participant. He shared
that Corruption
is an insidious plague that has a wide range of corrosive effects on societies. National and University anthem were played
on the occasion. Dr. Hussain Ali Lecturer Department of Sociology delivered a
power point presentation on the UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION AGAINST CORRUPTION
(UNCAC). The presenter discussed in
detail about the adoption process of
the UNCAC. He shared that according to a report published by the World Bank –
More than 1 trillion US$ is paid in bribes a year around the world. Similarly
Transparency International (2008) Estimated $2.6 trillion are stolen annually
through corruption – a sum equivalent to more than 5 per cent of the global GDP. Furthermore, the presentation covered the aim and structure of the
convention. After his detail presentation Mr. Akhter Lecturer Department of
International Relations shared his personal experiences that how the public and
private officials acting the corrupt activities and miss using their
authorities for personal gain. The Deputy Commissioner Mardan as Guest Speaker
shared his valuable views on this occasion. He shared about the major causes of
Corruption in Pakistani society and highlighted that Corruption
is a key element in economic underperformance and a major obstacle to poverty
alleviation and development. Furthermore, in his speech he given stress that
this is the core responsibility and duty of Pakistani youth to play their vital
role for reducing the corruption and break the corruption chain. The Dean
Faculty of Social Sciences in his closing remarks shared that Corruption
undermines democracy and the rule of law, leads to violations of human rights,
distorts markets, erodes the quality of life and allows organized crime,
terrorism and other threats to human security to flourish. He formally shared
the Vote of Thanks to the Deputy Commissioner Mardan and all the other
participants for important speech and presence on the occasion. At the end an
awareness walk was took place within the Campus.
Chairpersons and Faculty from the
department of International Relations, Psychology and Sociology were present at
the occasion and awareness walk.
